Is my journal private?

Yes. Your journal, birth details and context answers are encrypted on your device before they are stored. What reaches Astrum’s servers is encrypted. How recovery works depends on the recovery option you choose.

What happens if I lose my password and my recovery code?

That depends on a switch in Settings. With assisted recovery on, Astrum retains the recovery material needed to restore access to your record, so we can help you back in — and the same fact means we could read it. The process takes three days and emails you when it starts, so a request you did not make can be cancelled. With it off, nobody can restore your access, including us.

What is the recovery code?

A one-off code shown when your record is first encrypted, which opens your record without Astrum being involved. It is offered as a QR code as well as text so you can photograph it, and it never travels to a server either way. Keep it somewhere safe: it is shown once and Astrum cannot show it to you again.

Does it work if the readings turn out to be nothing?

That is the intended outcome when it is the true one. The synthesis screen reports “no, nothing here beat chance” with the same prominence it would give a finding. An engine that can only report successes is not measuring anything.

How long before it can tell me anything?

Astrum can show you readings from the beginning. Testing them takes longer. A handful of rated months cannot reliably separate a pattern from chance, so Astrum marks early results as provisional. The record becomes more informative as it grows.

Can I get my data out?

Yes. Settings has an export of your whole record, and it is the plain contents rather than a proprietary bundle.

Is this medical, financial or legal advice?

No, and it is built not to read like it. The life-change index counts how much change a period demanded — a wedding and a redundancy both count — and it does not assess health.

Privacy

Encrypted before it leaves your device.

Astrum encrypts in the browser. One random key encrypts your record, and that key is never stored anywhere — only sealed copies of it, which your password and your recovery code each open. The server stores ciphertext. Whether anything else can open a copy is the one thing you decide, below.

The one honest tension in any system like this is that “nobody can ever read it” and “nothing is ever lost” cannot both be true. Astrum makes that a visible switch instead of a hidden default, and tells you what each side costs.

The trade-off: assisted recovery means Astrum retains the technical ability to restore access to your encrypted record. Turn it off and only you can recover it.
